With an estimated 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic created since the 1950s, there is growing plastic waste concern worldwide. Sadly, only 9% of that plastic has been recycled, and the remaining 89% has either been burned or has found its way into landfills, waterways, and other natural areas. Plastic trash contamination severely threatens the nation's natural resources and ecosystems everywhere, including South Africa.
Illibrium Technologies has structured its entire business approach towards addressing this growing concern. They approached us to help them develop a brand strategy that would help position them as an eco-friendly engineering consultancy for large-scale infrastructure projects. Illibrium is guided by circular economic thinking principles throughout their entire business processes, in order to support infrastructural development with efficient solutions that reduce negative environmental impact.
The creative direction took cues from the client’s ecological concerns and appreciation for indigenous knowledge systems. Illibrium’s identity is inspired by its vision of achieving balance between infrastructural development and environmental impact. The name 'Illibrium', being a contraction of ‘Equilibrium’, became the main visual metaphor for the project. The result is a brand identity whose graphic elements are expressed through the lens of a traditional woodcut aesthetic. Their combination logo, is an abstraction of the company’s initials into a triangular form, alluding to the balance they seek to bring about.
The brand strategy informed the work done on developing their other assets and collateral for the project, such as the brand message, website, company profile and corporate stationery.
